Swarm of Bees

June 15, 2010

Was doing a nice long road ride the other day.  I was coasting during a recovery break taking in the views around me.  I subconsciously was batting away these bugs that kept flying into me.  Soon it became apparent that these were not bugs, but honey bees.  Before I could brake I flew right into the swam.  I don’t mean 10-20 bees.  I’m talking about the kind that we see in cartoons that form shapes.  It was a black cloud of bees.  As soon as I entered I was out the other side.  I stopped to watch the swarm and they continued on their path.  Not one bee sting.

This is the second time in my life I’ve seen a swarm like this.  After some research on the internet as to why they swarm, it became clear that it’s rare to see a swarm.  Has something to do with mating, the queen, relocation, etc.

18 Miles and Short Run

June 3, 2010

Bike Stats
Run Stats

Nice relaxing ride on roads that had minimal traffic.  Suppose to be cruise intervals today, which are very stressful on legs, but I changed to more of an endurance recovery ride since I felt my legs needed that.

The transition from bike to run is still painful, but after a mile, my legs do just fine.  That first mile is pure torture.   I’ll try to always throw in a run after a bike even if it’s only a mile or two, just so my legs get use to the transition.

Training Week

July 4, 2009

I’m really not happy with were I’m at training.  I feel so out of shape.  Maybe it’s because I know this year was a building year so I have a different mentality.  Last year I was out for blood but this year, racing expert, I know I don’t have a chance at the podium.  I need to pick up my training so next year I can competitive.

Calorie Consumption

June 8, 2009

Today was a VERY active day for me.  In the morning I swam 1/2 mile, lift weights, core workout and ran a short 3 miles.  All day I felt starved no matter what I ate.  I tried high protein since it’s suppose to make you feel full longer.  Didn’t work.  Then this evening I ran another 3 miles and that just added to it.  My body is starving but I know I’ve fed it enough.  I keep drinking water hoping that will subdue, but I just burn more calories walking to the bathroom every 10 minutes.

Weekly Training

May 26, 2009

Have my first stage race coming up this weekend.  Saturday is a time trial and a short-track race, while Sunday is the normal XC race.  Not really a high priority race for me, just something I wanted to try out.

Pushing it too hard?

I actually had a good training week this past week. I believe I put in 9 hours total, which for me is good. I’m still feeling disorganized with teaching so that does eat into my training time. The spring semester ends soon so I’ll have no more excuses to get out of training.

On sunday I did have a strange episode with my training. I rode 40 miles then proceeded to run 6 miles. However a mile into the run I just collapsed on the street. I didn’t really feel it coming at all. One second I’m running and the next second ian face down on the road. I’m guessing I just pushed myself too far that day. I’m sure my nutrition wasn’t up to par either.

PLRA Time Trial = Mud

April 26, 2009

Other than a face plant into mud, it was a fun trail to ride.  I’m am very unhappy with my fitness level so I need to pick things up.  I have another race this Sunday so hopefully my head stays focused.  It’s going to be a long race.

Kinda Sore After First Ride

March 26, 2009

Finally got on the trail and let me tell ya, I’m hurting this week.  All those hours on the trainer and spin bike doesn’t really prepare you for the stress a real ride puts on your body.  It’s not so much the legs, but all those little stabilizing muscles that you don’t really use on a trainer or spin bike because they are fixed objects.  My lower back is hurting.

After my ride i did run two miles on the trail which fried my calf muscles.

Today going out for another ride, after that it looks like rain for a few days.  :(

Friday morning, my goal is to swim a 1/2 mile (in pool), then do spin class.  After that I hope to run a couple miles on the trail.  It’s suppose to rain so that might change my plans.

Week of 2/2: Build 1

February 1, 2009

My legs were dead weight at the end of the week, mainly due to weight lifting.  Although I did do intervals this week, I found the recovery rides much more enjoyable.  :)   This weeks workout shows a lot of spin classes, which I could substitute with intervals on my trainer if I so so wish.  I’m just trying to get out of the house for a bit.

Week of 1/26: Build 1

January 25, 2009

Getting back in the groove of posting my workouts, which helps hold me accountable.  I’m teaching at a local university and the new semester really bogged me down, but now I think I’m in a groove so training can pick up again.  For this week I’ve planned the following:

So Busy

January 22, 2009

Been busy teaching so it’s been hard to keep up with training.  I think I’ve found my groove now so hopefully I can get my planned hours in.  For the rest of this week, I’m going to try and finish strong.  I’ll do CTS: Relentless Attack for an hour tonight, CTS: Climb, Climb, Climb tomorrow, hit the gym on Saturday and then do a 2 hour recovery ride on Sunday.

Week Of 12/29: Base 3 Continues

December 28, 2008

Okay, I took a TON of time off over the holidays hoping it would recharge me for the training season.  Hopefully it works.  My hours will continue to remain relatively low to help keep my batteries fresh.  As I mentioned before, I don’t think I took enough time away from the bike so I’ve dropped my base hours to hopefully energize my body for the upcoming season.

This week workout really focuses on the gym.  My goal is around 3 to 4 hours on the bike, no more than one hour per session.  If I feel motivated and want to do more, great.  This is my last week that I can really slack off.  Next week spin class starts for me so the hours will increase significantly.
