Iceman 2007 Race Results

November 12, 2007

Finished 11th out of 110 racers in my class.  Placed 383 out of 2200 racers.  My time was 2:03:42.  Here are the times of the racers above me in my class (my time listed last).  My goal was top 10 and I was 7 seconds off of that goal.  Looking at the times, I am not that far off of top 5.

Matt Zak 1:52:52
Alan Smith 1:54:47
Chris Molnar 1:55:12
Brad Bierema 1:58:57
Bryan Rypkowski 1:59:19
Peter Cherchian 2:01:00
John Osgood 2:01:41
Gavin MacFarlane 2:02:01
David Scranton 2:02:10
David George 2:03:35
Christian Glupker 2:03:42

The weather was awesome.  High 30′s at the start, mid 40′s at the end.

I’m still undecided about what class to race next year.  I may move up to Expert, however my time in Expert class would have been 30th place out of 46 racers.  The winning time was 1:45:58. I would need to move my training to the next level.  The other option is staying in sport and going for a podium finish.  Right now I’m leaning towards Expert class.

Iceman did attract some pro racers, including the legend himself, Ned Overend.  Here are the top 6 Pro Men finishes.  It’s amazing that their times are 20+ minutes faster.  Unbelievable.

Brian Matter 1:30:30
Michael Simonson 1:31:03
Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski 1:31:11
Tristan Schouten 1:31:24
Jesse Lalonde 1:33:10
Ned Overend 1:34:21

ICEMAN 2007

November 8, 2007

Here’s the map:

Iceman Trail

Approximately 27 miles, point to point.  My goal is 2 hours. I’m ditching the camalback and going with two water bottles.  One filled with Hammer Heed and the other will be 1/2 water and 1/2 Gatorade.  I’ve never raced with this mix, but in training it seemed to work.

Weather, as of now, is suppose to be awesome.  45 degrees and sunny.  Very nice.

Iceman Cometh 2006

November 8, 2006

Well, I finished Iceman for the fourth consecutive year.  It was a great day for the race, although it was VERY cold at the start.  We’ve been spoiled that last two years.  I did keep warm, except my feet were frozen the whole way.  Painfully frozen.  I need to get some of those booties that cover the front vents on the shoe.

Another issue was cramping again.  Same problem as the Boyne Marathon.  I need to really focus on my nutrition.  I did switch to Hammer Nutrition exclusively this year and their website has an incredible amount of info on how to properly feed the body.  That is my off season homework.

I did finish 22nd in my class (110 total), which is a huge improvement over my 67th place finish in 2005 (120 total).  My first year at iceman I finished 113 out of 128, so my training is working.  Goal for 2007 Iceman is top 5.

Here are some photos from this years Iceman:

Here’s to another great racing season:

Iceman Soon

October 30, 2006

Little nervous, bike has been in shop since there was a recall on the new shocks.  I may get it back just a few days before the race.  Being a brand new bike, I’d like to get some saddle time before I stand at the starting gates.

Iceman 2005 – Let’s Try It Again.

November 22, 2005

Okay, Iceman is here again.  I feel SO confident.  I didn’t really race at all this year, but my saddle time increased three fold.

The most important lesson I learned in 2004 was how to start.  No more sprinting, I’ll let everyone else sprint.  I’ll move of through attrition.

Race went good, never had to stop for a rest.  I did use Acclerade sport drink again (used it 2004 as well).  Still not sure about this drink.  I can’t mix it as suggested because it’s SO thick.  Having a diluted drink doesn’t help. I really need to start researching my nutrition if I want to really get better.

My time was 2 hours and 19 minutes.  Last year I was 2 hours and 41 (?) minutes.  I finished 67th out of 132, which is MUCH better than 113th I did the prior year.  My goal for 2006 is top 20.  I also will starting racing in the MMBA CPS.

Here are some pics from Iceman:

Iceman 2004 – My First Race

December 10, 2004

I’ve been a recreational mountain biker forever now and finally upgraded my Specialized Rockhopper to a Specialized Epic Comp.  Epic’s are pure race bikes.  While I was purchasing this bike (in August), the shop told me I should try out this race called ‘ICEMAN’.  Being a competitive person, sure why not.

As I learned more about the race, I started to get a little nervous.  27 miles, point to point.  Hmmm, can I do that at a ‘race’ pace.

So race day gets here and I find myself dressed for very cold weather.  It’s 50 degrees.  Luckily I can shed off my sleeves and leg warmers.  My jacket has removable sleeps as well.

Around mile 12 I have an asthma attack, which is interesting since I don’t have asthma.  This is the first time I’ve ever pushed my body to the point of death.  I never would have thought this given my athletic background (football, baseball, track).

The race final ends with me crossing the finish line in 2 hours and 42 minutes.  That puts me in 113th place out of 128.   LOL.

This race sparked a new life motivation.  I don’t like to be beaten, and that race beat me, hard.  Going forward, I will conquer that race, I promise you that.

I didn’t wear a HRM since I didn’t have one.  Probable good since It would have blown up and started a forest fire.  Anyway’s, here are some pics:
